Building Bridges to Opportunity in El Corpus
We are happy to share a major milestone in our mission to expand the library at Instituto Fermín Mayorga. Our primary goal for 2025 was to raise the necessary capital to move from vision to reality. Thanks to an incredible outpouring of support and several sizeable gifts, we met the challenge, giving the Friends of IFM $10,000 in cash on hand. These combined efforts mean that we officially have enough funds to break ground on the library expansion project.
The transformation is already underway! Our down payment has been sent to Honduras, and the contractor is scheduled to begin the expansion between late February and early March. The construction will progress from the cinderblock-based structure to the roof, followed by electrical wiring and the installation of air conditioning to ensure a comfortable learning environment. The school will be taking photos throughout the build so we can share the progress of this new technology hub with the donors who made it possible.
Our goal this year is to complete the physical library expansion, creating the “virtual library” envisioned by Librarian Karen. This new space will house a dedicated computer lab and the equipment we have been able to purchase so far. Through this project, we are building bridges to opportunity for hundreds of students in El Corpus.
The Work Ahead: Our 2026 Goal
While we are celebrating the beginning of the construction project, our work is not yet finished. The $10,000 currently on hand will cover the initial construction, but it leaves us with little cushion for cost overruns. Furthermore, the “shell” of the building is just the beginning.
Our fundraising goal for 2026 is $7,000. These funds are essential to move beyond the physical walls and fully equip the space. We still need to raise money for:
- Additional computers and hardware
- Software and digital resources
- Furniture (desks, shelving, and seating)
- Ongoing maintenance

Save the Dates: Spring Plant Sale & Fundraiser
While we build in Honduras, we are growing support here at home! Please mark your calendars for our Spring 2026 Plant Sale and Fundraiser on Sunday, April 12.
To kick off the fundraiser, join us for a “Plant Party” on Friday, April 10. The evening will feature botanical cocktails, a raffle, and a special sneak-peak plant sale for our supporters. It’s the perfect chance to pick up some spring greenery early while celebrating this season of growth for the students of IFM. We look forward to seeing you there!
