The bond between the Boyer family and Honduras is a story that spans generations. From Jeff’s early Peace Corps service to his continued connection with the Lainez family, the relationship has been one of mutual respect, learning, and enduring friendship. In March 2024, another chapter was written in this ongoing story, a bittersweet journey that brought the Boyer family back to Instituto Fermín Mayorga. This time, Jeff was accompanied by his son Josh, daughter-in-law Jen, and college-aged grandchildren, Molly and Alex. It was a family affair, a testament to the legacy of connection Jeff had nurtured for so many years.
This trip, likely Jeff’s last, was marked by a deeply moving experience. The entire school community gathered for a half-day assembly in Jeff’s honor. It was a celebration of his dedication to Honduras and the impact he had made on countless lives. The students showcased their talents through poetry readings, vibrant traditional and modern dances, and heartfelt stories. The Boyer family was ceremoniously brought on stage, a recognition of their shared history with the school. The outpouring of love and appreciation was overwhelming, a “whole THING,” as one family member described it, “it was wild.” The celebration culminated in a powerful moment: a circle of students, hand in hand, singing “We Are the World” around the Boyer family. It was a poignant reminder of the global community Jeff had helped to build.
Beyond the celebration, the trip also served as a catalyst for future endeavors. Conversations with Karen, the current librarian at Instituto Fermín Mayorga, revealed a pressing need. Karen shared her vision for a “virtual library” – a space where students could access technology and expand their learning beyond the traditional classroom. Currently, the school has very limited computer access for students, with only a few computers available for specific courses. Karen’s vision involves expanding the current library space to create a dedicated computer lab, a resource that would be invaluable to the entire student body.
This vision resonated deeply with the Boyer family, solidifying their commitment to supporting Instituto Fermín Mayorga. The need was clear: funding for the library expansion and new technology was crucial. Inspired by Karen’s vision and the students’ potential, the Friends of Instituto Fermín Mayorga was formed. Our long-term goal is to raise the necessary funds to make Karen’s “virtual library” a reality. This is where our work begins, and where you can join us in building bridges to a brighter future for the students of Instituto Fermín Mayorga. And, as one of our board members (and a houseplant enthusiast!) suggested, we’re exploring creative fundraising ideas, including plant propagation sales, to help us reach our goal.
